Barcode Generator FAQ

What's the difference between 1D and 2D barcodes?

1D barcodes (like Code 128, UPC) are linear and store data horizontally only. They typically hold 20-25 characters. 2D barcodes (like QR Codes, Data Matrix) store data both horizontally and vertically, allowing them to hold much more information (up to several thousand characters).

Do I need special permission to use barcodes?

For internal use (inventory, asset tracking), no permission is needed. For retail products in stores, you need a GS1 company prefix for UPC/EAN codes. QR Codes and Code 39 can be used freely without registration.

What barcode format should I use for my needs?
  • Retail products (US/Canada): UPC-A
  • Retail products (international): EAN-13
  • Shipping labels: Code 128
  • Asset tracking: Code 39 or Code 128
  • Marketing/websites: QR Code
  • Small items/electronics: Data Matrix
Can barcodes be printed in color?

Yes, but with caution. Dark colors on light backgrounds work best. Avoid red (some scanners use red light). Ensure sufficient contrast between bars and background. Black on white is always the most reliable combination.
